Sword of Baldur

#501781
$394.95

We've designed this classic Viking sword as a tribute to Baldur, son of Odin and Frigg. The leather grip is laser engraved with three runes that we feel most befit the Norse God: Courage, Protection, and Strength. The 1065 high carbon steel blade is etched with runes that roughly can be translated as "Baldur", and arrives sharpened from the factory. The leather sheath has an integral belt. The sheath is covered with a layer of black suede and adorned with lace. The throat and chape bear a Viking symbol for the sun, as Baldur was known as a shining light to all who knew him.

OVERVIEW

In the pantheon of Norse deity, Baldur was the son of Odin and Frigg (thus a sibling to Thor and Loki) and as such, was destined to reign after Odin. Beloved by all the gods but Loki (surprised?), Baldur is known as a figure who bestows joy to all those who share his company. Old Norse poetry relates the death of Baldur as a tragedy and a harbinger of Ragnarok.

In honor of lesser-known siblings everywhere, we've designed this classic Viking sword as a tribute to the fairest member of Asgard. The leather grip of this sword is laser engraved with the three runes that we feel most befit the Norse God. Some scholars believe the name Baldur translates to "bold" so the rune of courage has been added. In her attempt to save Baldur from harm, Frigg asked all things to swear never to harm him (except mistletoe) so the rune of protection has also been included. Finally, Baldur was also known to always be prepared for battle, so the rune of strength completes the array.

The blade is etched with runes that roughly can be translated as the spelling of "Baldur". The leather sheath (with integral belt) is covered with a layer of black suede that is adorned with top grain lace, throat, and chape. The throat and chape bear a Viking symbol for the sun, as Baldur was known as a shining light to all who knew him. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts and arrives sharpened from the factory.

A other nice viking sword
I purchased this sword from an MRL retailer in Canada.
Viking swords are the ones I collect the most.
Baldur's sword was highly anticipated on my part.
The runes on the blade are very attractive.

The blade comes sharpened by the manufacturer? A rarity for Windlass swords. The blade is perfect, well aligned and well centered. No forging mark.

The handle on the other hand is less perfect. The runes on the leather sheath are well aligned on one side but completely off center on the other side. A bit annoying. The handle is a little long, I would have reduced it to 4'' in total.

The scabbard is made of wood, covered with leather. No ornamental metal parts. The toe is even leather, which I'm not used to seeing with Windlass. I like the belt wrapped around the scabbard on a Viking sword. I find it very pretty.

Overall another very nice creation from Windlass. A king's sword! I hope they work on new viking swords, especially the Langeid project
