OVERVIEW

This Mid 18th Century Scottish Basket-Hilt Back Sword is from a group of which about a dozen examples are known. Variations in the configuration of the hilt elements include examples with and without a forward quillion and the inclusion of an oval rein aperture. An example with that last feature, formerly in Eglinton Castle, sponsor and host of the Eglinton Tournament, is now in the Royal Ontario Museum. Most are mounted with earlier, presumably family blades.

This sword has been traditionally identified by the portrait of an 18th century Scottish Officer entitled The Pinch of Snuff and attributed to William Delacour. It features a real ray skin, wire-wrapped grip, intricate basket-hilt and a double fuller blade. A black scabbard with matching throat & belt stop and tip is included. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts.

Can be sharpened and/or personalized with 3 Initials for additional fees.

This is a nicely made, high quality sword for the price. I picked it up Friday and it was on display at a Scottish Games Sat. & Sun. More than a few experienced sword owners remarked on its balance and quality.I'm very pleased!

I have looked into basket hilts for a while. I considered the Eglinton, the Brass Basket from MR, and the Cold Steel basket hilts. I decided on this Eglinton and consider this a very fine sword. It is single edged (knuckle side), well balanced, and with a large enough grip for a big man to hold and wield. The blade is thicker than the photos convey, a positive. The hardware fits snug and the wire wrap over ray skin is a sure grip. I like the scabbard also - good fit and well made. Both me and a friend from fencing club bought this sword independently and were each equally impressed enough that we each brought it in to show the other.

This sword is extremely beautiful. Its quality is far better than I expected for the price. I bought it as a gift for my son-in-law and my husband is jealous and wants me to get him one.

Elegant Backsword
This beautiful back sword is balanced for the thrust. It has an intricately detailed basket. A real knockout for looks. I found that the basket came too far around so that it hit my wrist on both sides on cutting strokes (admittedly not the main purpose for this sword). I removed the last loop on the bottom of each side of the basket with a Dremel tool and the problem was solved. Not too much to do for a sword of this quality. The basket still looks great, even with the slight modification.

Fantastic Basket-Hilt
This is probably my favorite basket-hilt sword in my collection. The unique and intricate basket is well made and encloses the complete hand. The blade, although a bit heavy, is thick and sturdy. The wire wrapped ray skin handle looks great and is very tightly assembled. 2 thumbs up!

Stunning Sword
I purchased this as a "Deal of the Day".  I've had my eye on it for quite a while and was delighted to see it come up on sale.  It's stunning.  Feels great in the hand.  Nice weight and balance.  I had it sharpened and am pleased with the blade.  This is an item that now looks to be on the closeout list.  I'd suggest getting it before it's gone.  You won't regret it.
