"the ravages of heathen men..."
With these words the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle describes the first recorded Viking raid, in 793, an attack on the monastary of Lindisfarne, an island off the English coast. For the next 300 years shiploads of marauders pouring out of Norway, Sweden and
Denmark would dominate political and economic life in Western Europe.
Renowned in history as savage plunderers, the "Northmen" were also accomplished navigators and builders, daring explorers and skilled traders and artisans. They ravaged the British Isles, France and Russia and established prosperous communities to support an energetic trade network. Viking raiding expeditions attacked targets as far away as Sapin, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Norse adventurers visited Baghdad and Jerusalem and became Imperial Guards at Constantinople.
In the 9th century Vikings discovered and colonized Iceland, but later colonies in Greenland and North America failed. The three centuries of Viking dominance over
western Europe established the Norsemen as one of the most important and influential peoples in the history of Western Civilization.
