OVERVIEW

The Square Pilum was the principal weapon of the Roman legionnaire, well designed to destroy the ability of the opponent's shield defense. The short head could easily penetrate a wooden shield, and the long neck prevented the head from being cut off. Thus encumbered, the shield was rendered useless, leaving the opponent unprotected. Made of mild steel, the pilum would easily bend, preventing it from being thrown back. When the heat of the battle had subsided, it could then be retrieved and straightened. Our replica javelin is of a late version common about 100 A.D. that is slightly weighted to aid penetration.

Nice! Worth noting that one of them (I ordered two) had been poorly stained and so wouldn't take glue or epoxy. Had to drill through the side to put in a retaining screw, which cracked it. They also don't sell butt caps that fit this.

This is a well-made piece, with good finish work.  The description offers it's full length, but does not mention that it ships in two pieces, which was a disappointment.  Further, the two pieces, while well fitted, do not have any method for secure connection, which means the buyer has to drill out and install connecting hardware.  Center-boring a round rod can be problematic for the DIY-er.
