Hand and Half Swords

The term hand-and-a-half is more a modern designation for a range of sword types that featured tapered blades longer than the standard shorter arming swords of the time but without the double-hand grips of larger, heavier war-swords. Many different swords fall into this category, and many of them are as maneuverable as they are surprisingly sturdy. Hand-and-a-half swords roughly fall into two categories. The first tends to have approximately six-inch grips with the blades generally between 34–36 inches. The second type is known as “bastard” swords with grips around five inches or so, and blades 30–34 inches long. Both are light enough to use one handed but allow for two handed use by gripping the base of the pommel. Blade shapes varied to the changes from the mail to full plate armor, but remained of a size that made them effective from horseback.

Museum Replicas houses a collection of hand-and-a-half swords which includes arguably the most famous of all medieval blades – the longsword. We also offer two other traditional swords of the period – the bastard sword (English and German versions) and the war-sword. Then there is the Sword of Homildon Hill which is a nod to the English–Scottish Wars of the 15th century. The fantasy element in the collection is represented by licensed replicas of the film Conan the Barbarian (1982) and a stunning reproduction of the paladin Roland’s Durandal. Just like our other swords, Museum Replicas’ hand-and-a-half swords are aesthetically pleasing and works of excellent craftsmanship. Check them out now!

Review of: Conan Atlantean Sword

Awesome sword. The detail in the casings is superb, and the bronze finish was done very well. See my review of the fathers sword about the etching as they appear to be done the same. I ordered it sharpened and it was done very well, extremely sharp with nice clean lines. And while this sword weighs more than the fathers sword it is better balanced and feels a little more lively in the hand. Fitment is great, everything is tight and secure.

Review of: Conan Atlantean Sword

I have been doing a lot of research on a few of these Conan swords.  From what I have found, this is the one you want to get.  It has a carbon steel blade and a full tang grip.  There is a threaded rat tail that holds on the pommel.  This is not the most useful sword as it was created for a fantasy movie and not designed as a historically used tool.
That being said, this is hardly the maker's fault.
This is a heavy sword.  Overall, if you love the movie as much as I do and you want a licensed copy of this sword without breaking the bank, this is the best example of Conan's sword for the money.

Review of: Conan Father’s Sword

I have always been a really big fan of the Conan movies and have dreamed of having the swords from the movies.  This one is really nice, not just for the price, but a really nice sword.  The lettering is etched in the the blade and it feels solid.  I am not going to defend against any barbarian hordes but I fits the bill on my game room wall.

I bought this sword on a whim from the deal of the day.  It is very cool and surprisingly light and well balanced.  I'm thinking about building a dark elf costume around it.

Review of: Sword of Homildon Hill

The Sword of Homildon Hill is an exceptionally good offering from Windlass. The sword is quite elegant to look at with a very pleasing aesthetic. The decorative guard and pommel have a surprisingly nice looking antique applied to it. Usually, I am not a fan of these types of techniques, but this one is pulled of quite nicely. The peen on the pommel is a little rough looking but nothing that distracts greatly from it. Plus, the fact that the blade IS peened is certainly a plus.
The blade is very nice as well, with the engraving on it looking top notch. It does not suffer from any "whippiness" as some Windlass blades have been known to do. It handles quite nicely, in fact, with a lot of the weight being balanced towards the handle. This makes for a very responsive sword that can swing and change direction easily. It can even be wielded in one hand with moderate ease. I am not certain of its cutting capabilities, however, as I do not currently have a set up for test cutting. It does feel like it would do well, but since it does not feel very blade heavy I cannot say for certain.
The scabbard is a surprisingly good fit, something that Windlass usually struggles to get right. It also has a very nice looking antique applied to the metal which compliments the sword well.
Overall, I think this is a must buy for any Windlass fan, or anyone looking to get an above average budget sword.

Review of: Blacksword

This sword is definitely a perfect balance of speed, power, strength, and durability.  I definitely love it because it allowed me to decorate the sword into my own design and it's definitely combat ready.  The blade itself is very strong and it doesn't rust easily due to the black finish.

Review of: Battlecry Agincourt War Sword

Once again MRL comes through with another impressive product. I now own all but the Maldon Viking sword of the Battlecry sword series, each one unique and equally impressive in their own right. This is the shortest sword I have seen in a while but it fills a gap between arming sword and longsword. Buy this sword and you wont regret it. Especially with the 15% discount for Christmas.
