OVERVIEW

This Greek-style Butt Cap for spears protects the shaft and keeps it from splintering. It also gives balance to the spear. But, the Greek cleverly realized it could also be used as a secondary spearhead should the primary spearhead (#600074) be broken. No Greek spear is complete without this butt cap. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts.

Bigger and heavier than described
Juat got mine. Its 10.5 inches overall and substancially heavier than the blade its supposed to counter-balance. The opening is 1 inch and my pole and blade are 1.25 inch so some whittling is in order.  I wish they would put opening diameters in the descriptions.  Otherwise a heafty well made hunk of steel!

Very well done, except
This item is a very hefty and sturdy addition to any pole type weapon, it only has 2 drawbacks in my books, 1: the ID on the cap is 1" exact while the spears on this site have an ID of about 1 1/4" which makes for some interesting alterations needing to be done to a pole, 2: it is much heavier then the spears on this site which does throw off the balance which causes one to place the grip much lower from the spear head for a proper balance. suggested use an 8' to 9' pole is best so you have a proper hand hold zone.

Excellent
Really nice, solid piece! I used this butt cap for a 7-foot halberd I put together, and it worked great. I found that the measurements I made different from what is shown on the product page here on the site: mine has an OAL of about 10.5" and weighs 25.4 ounces... Additional info for builders: the inside diameter of the socket was a bit under an inch, and has a depth of about 3-1/4". Note that the socket is not drilled for a securing pin.

Solid construction and functional
This is a very solid, heavy buttcap.  I'm not sure if this is a historical design or not, since I'm used to seeing these with squared sides, and this one is round all the way around, but it can definitely be used to brace into soft ground or even moderately rocky soil while protecting the wood of the spear.  It can also be used to "set" the spear into turf, allowing it to be confidently stored in an upright position without the use of a rack while camping or in the field.

The Greeks (and other contemporary cultures) also used these as back-ups, in case the main spearhead was broken or damaged, and there may be some other techniques which make use of it, but in my useage it's mostly just to counter-balance the point, allowing me to project it further out in front of me.  Because the cap is so heavy, it provides a significant advantage in this regard.

Bottom Line: This works well, and does what you'd want it to do.  If you're trying to finish off a Greek spear, or any spear which calls for a pointed cap, then this will do the job.

Really like it
This is teh one i chose for my spear. I think with enough force the cap could be used to punch through  light plate. Haven't tested that but i think it would.  Good buy.

Good balance for the Spear
This thing is solid and has a good weight to it.  Perfect counter balance for the Greek Spearhead.  Actually fits fairly well on a wooden closet rod if you want a cheap shaft.

Nice butt...cap!
This cap is very well made. It should balance out the greek spearhead nicely when I get them mounted on the shaft. Thanks for a solid product.

Butt cap for Greek Spear
I ordered this with the Greek Spear Head, which is on back order. I don't know if they will fit on the same pole. I assume they will. It seems very sturdy. It's sort of useless to me without the Spear Head that it's supposed to counter balance, though.

Nice Piece
Nice, heavy  buttcap.  Could be used as a secondary spear itself in a pinch.  Great for balancing out the Greek Spearhead.

Exactly as described!
This end cap balances the Greek spear perfectly. The angle of the taper matches that of the Greek spear. I'm using a round, 6 foot long, 2 ply laminated and tapered Hickory shaft. To secure the pieces to the shaft I intend to try beeswax and a properly fit taper.

This is a beast. It's HEAVY, I am not exaggerating, and we'll worth the price. Absolutely solid except for the cap, which is about 3-4" deep. This is a weapon on par with a mace, ideal for walking sticks (my use) and self defense. If you thrust with it, you'll crush any bone you strike. The pic doesn't do it justice. This is a BIG, solid piece of hardware.
