The spear is one of the oldest and most important of all hand weapons. The Celts, as well as the Vikings, used this type not for throwing, but as an effective cutting weapon. Socket will fit a 1-1/4" round pole (not included).
  • Overall: 19-1/2"
  • Blade: 3/16" thick, 2-1/2" wide, 13" long

Arm your infantry with these.
Nice heavy long spear head.  The socket extends right into the spear head which is a lot stronger then a lot of the Windlass spear heads.  Most of the spear heads on the market have a socket that ends before the actual blade.  This provides a weak area right below the head.  This design is much stronger.

Nice spear head at a great price
I bought a pair of these from the Deal of the Day and have no regrets.  Very nice.

Overall Good
The Hewing Spear is a very unique offering by Windlass. The large flat blade can be sharpened to make for an excellent cutting weapon. The price is, in my opinion, the best selling point, and if purchased though Deal of the Day, it cannot be beat.
I have found it to be a very good cutter and have had more success cutting than stabbing, as I am not familiar with any spear techniques.
The overall construction does have a flaw. There is no prominent central ridge to this spear, instead it is mostly flat in the blade, which can cause the spear to bend some, right at the joint of the shaft and blade.
I have not done any harder cutting than on water bottles, yet there was a noticeable bend in the blade. It bent back to shape easily enough, but this could be worse with a tougher target.
Overall I do still believe it to be an excellent buy, but do keep in mind what targets you throw at it.

Battle ready
I have been looking at both hewing spears versions for some time. When this variant came up on Deal of the Day, I pulled the trigger on two of them. Even if never used in real life, I like for all my weapons to be battle ready, rather than just accurate 'facsimiles'.

To bring them up to their full battle potential, I shipped them to Razor Edge Sharpening in Laguna Niguel, CA (https://www.razoredgesharpening.com/).

Beautiful and well made cannot wait until I can affix the handle!

I picked this up on the Deal of the day and got it for $21 shipped. Hands-down the best $20 I've ever spent. There materials alone are worth more than the price I paid. The 1065 steel is forged, and came beautifully polished. I spent about 15 minutes with a handheld sharpener and it took an edge I can shave my arm hair off with. I mounted it on a 7' ash pole, added some brass studs, and capped it with an old sword pommel. I would confidently take on any rampaging T-Rexes with this weapon. Great piece, and certain to start conversations.

This is a great spear head, I bought two of them unsharpened and had no problem mounting them on a oak 3 ft shaft, though you can use a standard 6 ft shaft, you can't really expect to throw this one with any accuracy. It is made for stabbing and hewing at foes, mine came out solid and work like any ancient warrior would want them too.

Beautifully well made. A formidable weapon.

I've had this for about a month and couldn't be more satisfied with the spearhead. It's long and very sturdy with a pronounced mid-rib that provides good reinforcement to the point. No sharpening service was offered, but a simple hand sharpener that goes for under ten dollars about everywhere and ten minutes minutes later it was butcher knife sharp.
I mounted it on a six foot hickory shaft and used the pre-drilled holes to fix the blade to the shaft. I truly believe that this weapon could take down any animal that walks the earth (in skilled hands).
Excellent value. Fine blade!

This is a large, (19"overall, 13"blade) dangerous weapon. This spearhead could be used as a short sword. The weight is perfect for mounting on a short staff like a Zulu spear, and it's easy to mount. It's also very easy to put a sharp edge on this spearhead using an AccuSharp sharpener. I'd feel confident in defending myself against a swordsman using this weapon. I really like this item! Well worth the money!

This would be an excellent spear except for one major flaw, if you don't pay extra to have it sharpened it comes in dull as a butter knife. To make things worse the angle of the blade makes it near impossible to sharpen on your own. I was greatly disappointed

This spearhead is huge, about the size of a short sword. It is a great spearhead otherwise.
