Flat Ended Butt Cap

Customer Rating: 4 ratings

With the discovery of metal, spears became much more effective. In just about all cultures metal butt caps were used to protect the base of the shaft, and to add balance to the overall weapon. Can be used for any spear since the beginning of the Iron Age. Well made of mild steel, and give an improved appearance as well as balancing the spear. Generic, and does not represent any one specific time or place. Ready to mount. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts®.

I bought this as part of a set- the spearhead and buttcap; I have to say, this is probably the finest weapon I've ever gotten from MRL/Windlass- the socket is seamless yet not flimsy, the blade and butt are solid, well shaped and definitely suitable to the task for which these were made. Finding a shaft to mount these on has been a bit of a bother, but I'm told that Home Depot or Lowe's carries the necessary wood shafts in the plumbing department? It isn't where you'd think, in the gardening section (I was thinking shovels, rakes, etc - they have replacement shafts, but those are shaped for that sort of use, not as a spear stave).

This is a massive hunk of metal! It's well-made but not refined, it has a real period "blacksmith" look about it...well worth the $25. Can't wait to find a quality shaft to put it on!
