OVERVIEW

Circa 1300

The remains of a mace of this type were found in the River Thames, but they were in use all across Europe. Little finesse was needed for this brutal mace, and a warrior strong enough to wield it could crush helms and break swords with the heavy blows it could deliver. Made from four bars of steel with a wood and leather grip and a large steel pommel to help balance it, this is indeed an awesome weapon. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts.
  • Overall: 28-1/2"
  • Blade: 20" x 2" x 3/16"

Cool piece, way too heavy
I spent way too long trying to convince myself I had a reason to own this, but its design was just too cool. MRL lists the weight at 4.5#; my actual mace is fully 5 (2275g), which is already a wide range. The rough finish doesn't bother me, because it actually seems perfect for what it is, but it would be cool to see Windlass try to shave down the excess weight. The original copy in an Italian Museum is listed at 1430g or about #3.2. Windlass could end up with a more accurate representation and actually save material at the same time by using thinner bars that taper to the "edge" like the original does- they look like they're very nearly blades in pictures I've found.

Great piece of steel
Like many have  said this is not lite but feels great in the hand.  Was very happy with it when it showed up.

Get it!
This thing is an absolute monster to wield. Of course you’re not going to be able to wield with with the finesse of a short sword, but it’s a bar mace, it’s meant for devastating anything it hits, and it will! Great purchase in my opinion.

Not balanced
The Mace is definitely heavy but the pommel is not large enough to add any balance to the piece.  Maybe its just the one I received but the four bars appear to be different in size from one another, thickness is all the same.  The pommel appears smaller than what looks to be pictured.  If you ever swing at a target you better not miss or you may find yourself drugged behind and thrown of balance as well.  I own an Albion Atlantean sword and as large as it is and not a sword I would want to use its balance makes it easy to hold and wield.  Pommel needs to be larger it feels hollow in weight.

Thank you very much for your review. We do apologize for some of the issues you had with this product. Each of our pieces is hand forged by master blacksmiths, but variations do happen. The slightly different sized bars do not impact the durability or strength of the mace. As far as the weight goes, the historical piece we replicated our bar mace from was similarly designed. These were not meant for finesse, but rather to allow untrained conscripts to easily obliterate whatever is in front of them, and a top heavy mace leads to a devastating blow.

When this came, I was surprised how heavy and solid this thing felt. Certainly, with this, a strong-armed individual can easy put down a horde of zombies medieval-style! Very solid construction; thick, solid leather wrapping. Good work, Windlass!

Take that, obnoxious drunks! Oh, wait - it's named that because it's made of welded steel bars. Hm. Still ... why not LOL?!  A brutal find indeed!

Just in case you didn't notice the other reviews, yes this thing is a beast. Not particularly "pretty" but I imagine very effective. It's rather weighty towards the business end despite the large pommel. It's easily the heaviest mace in my collection. Very nice!
