Even with the gambeson and a mail shirt, a fighter was not as well protected as a warrior with plate armor. However, plate armor could be expensive. The brigandine filled this gap very well. This suede leather garment has small steel plates riveted between the outer shell and the lining. This kind of construction made it easy enough for a soldier to make and repair his own armor without needing the high skill of an armorer. Weighing only 6 lbs., it is very flexible and does not restrict movement. Commonly worn over a gambeson and mail shirt, it was not long before this form of protection was in wide use with fighters from knight to archer. Our vision has three buckles on each side for versatility in fit. Approx. 32" long. Brown leather shell only. Black sold out. One size fits most (chests up to 48").

I am happy with mine for the most part. It is very light duty and makes a nice costume peice but I wouldnt want to use it in any situation where I may depend on it for protection. The inside covering is black satin and just not tough enough. The straps and buckles at each side are very flimsy, made from the same thin suede the front is made from. A nice costume or LARP armor, just not tough enough for WMA or SCA combat.

Great piece for renaissance fairs. The weight is heavy enough to feel protected but light enough to wear for a long time.
