This beautiful pewter tankard has six red carnelian cabochons around the tankard and a double cross handle. The carnelian gem originates as a dull brown agate, but when skillfully heat-treated it becomes a bright, burnt-orange. Carnelian was used in Roman times to protect against envy, fear and rage.
