The Scandinavian goggled war helm was developed in the 8th century and had reached this form by the 10th century. The addition of the steel mask to the basic Spangenhelm offered much better protection to the face than a simple nasal protrusion and was quickly adopted. Though well known to the Viking Raider, mail coifs were seldom worn (except with a shaven head). For protection to the rest of the head and neck a camail “curtain” was often added to the helm, as in our offering. Made from 17 gauge hammer-hardened steel with 16 gauge steel camail with 3⁄8" diameter links. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts®.

An excellent helm but it has a great many problems. The Nose and cheek pieces are rounded with the shape of the helm instead of projecting out over the nose. The suspesion in the helm leaves alot to be desired. (pleather cap with a drawstring for sizing) I am not sure how it is anchored in but it feels flimsy. The look of the thing is perfect but its function is rather low. Also not enough chainmail skirting. Just enough to look cool not enough to protect the way it should. All that said I love the helmet and after re-polishing the shiney away with sack full of sand it looks great.

It just arrived. The only issue I have with this is that it needs to be adjusted. As is it fits my head but will not clear my nose, unless I want to jammed down on it. Which I am not.

I love Viking stuff (Celtic also); both are in my heritage. But I gotta tell ya, this helmet just looks . . . CHEAP !!- Though it's certainly not priced that way. : Too "shiney", too "comic book" and the pointy finial just looks cartoony or like a Kaiser Wilhelm wannabe! - Uhm, even though they may actually both have the same origins. Basically; nice try, but no cigar. Ya don't want to start to be confused with "BudK" products !!!
