How to create your own sword

The screen above has 5 tabs showing each of the components available.

Click on the first tab, blades

First choose either a brushed or polished blade. All blades are 42-1/2" long overall and made of hand forged high carbon steel. Just click on the desired style.

Blade is 33-1/4"
Tang is 9-1/4"

Choose from our selection of Oakeshoot style guards. Style VI can be chosen plain or engraved for an additional $5. If you choose the engrave-able guard please call Customer Service at 800-883-8838 to have the initials added to your order.

Once you select the guard style it will appear in the design area.

Select a grip style. Each style is leather wrapped wood and available in either brown or black. They are secured into place with a 2 part epoxy.

Then choose your pommel (peened in place, not screwed like most mass produced swords) and scabbard if desired. Scabbards are suede with metal furniture.

If you want the sword to arrive sharpened for an additional $18 check the "sharpen" box. We can engrave 3 initials on the blade in Prince Valiant font for an additional $5.00, just enter the information in the box provided. (If you wish more than 3 initials please call customer service at 800-883-8838.)

The total price will be calculated as per your choice of services and optionals. Once you have all the desired components on the screen. Then you can "add to cart" or "buy" right away.

Decent quality, questionable service.
I received the sword in good condition, and it appears sturdily built. The point of balance is around five inches from the guard, making it feel heavier than it actually is. The scabbard has that milsurp cheese smell, but appears to be of good quality, made in India. The 'type VI engravable' Guard and 'type k' pommel have had what appears to be a chemical blued finish applied to them, which I think looks pretty nice.

Having ordered the Style VI "engravable" handguard (I wrote to them and they told me it wasn't, but I asked for it anyway because I thought it looked cool), the throat of the scabbard is such that it prevents the sword from fully seating within it, due to the width of the raised "engravable" portion of the handguard. Due to the semi-custom nature of the sword, I assumed they would also ensure the proper fitment of the scabbard, but this was not the case; The scabbard is just leather, though, so it'll be an easy fix for me.

I also asked whether additional engravement was available through Email, but was told that it wasn't. I didn't call the number to double check, though.

I ordered the sword during last year's black friday sale, under the impression that all of the parts were in stock; It's taken about a year for it to finally be shipped to me.

Decent sword with some downsides
The good:
-Blade seems sturdily constructed
-Reasonably sharp (I ordered it sharpened)
-The ability to customize is very cool

The not so good:
-Balance is not great, blade-heavy
-Small, one-hand only grip, would be nice to have the possibility of additional length for a second hand option given the weight/balance
-Pommel came loose quickly, can twist it tight, but it is off-center

As an additional note, the tip of the blade is dulled even if ordered sharpened.

Overall, it depends on how much you value the customization element of it, it is not the best sword, but it is fine enough and being able to mix and match parts is a very cool thing that made it feel worthwhile even with the problems.

Excellent sword for the money!
The Type XI blade is gorgeous. Not as heavy as the Classic Medieval Sword. The grip was an inch or so longer than I expected, but it's fine. The pommel is massive, but I'm assuming it's large enough so everything balances out. They discontinued the guard choice that I originally selected, so I went with the closest thing available, the Type V. There were small scratch marks where the blade was possibly clamped into a vice when it was being assembled, but they're minor and I don't mind too much -- I've done worse things to my own swords, LOL. I didn't opt for the scabbard to save money. The peen job was nicely done. For just around $200, this sword is a steal. Get one!

Overall, Very Impressed
To be honest, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I ordered this, especially considering the price tag.  Being an adventurous sort, I went ahead and did it anyway.

Here I am three or so weeks after ordering and I've spent the past hour or so getting to know this sword.  The first thing you should be aware of is: this is a heavy beast of a sword.  I might be a little biased, since I am more used to lighter blades like rapiers and longswords of the Oakeshott XVIIIa variety.  Without using a scale, I would peg the weight at about 3 lbs with the type VII guard and type J pommel., and the center of gravity on this particular configuration is about 4-4.5" past the guard.  This thing really wants to cut, but recovery can be a bit of an issue.

Build wise this is a very robust piece.  The blade has some distal taper, and only a moderate profile taper.   The pommel is huge, at over 1.5" at its thickest point.  The stitching on the grip is a little thicker than I would like, but by no means unacceptable.

I wish the fuller were a hair wider and/or deeper, just to bring the weight down, or had a stronger profile taper.  That said, I very much enjoy the piece, and the minor imperfections present in the finish (there are a few), make it some more rustic, more handcrafted.

If I have one request, it is for more options.  I would like an option for a hand and a half/ longsword option, coupled with a broader choice of guards and pommels.  That's just me though; the options here present a nice variety.

One little postscript: I paid for the sharpening service, and while the sword was indeed quite sharp, I was bummed that the sharpening is more a knife bevel in the last few millimeters of the blade, rather than a more gradual sharpening typical of what one would see historically.

That ends my review, with only a few minor grouses on an otherwise solid product.

Overall a very great value for money!
Overall, I'm really impressed and feel like I got a really good value for what I paid.  My sword was well put together, and the engraving was done beautifully.  The sharpening service as well put a nice edge on it.  The finish was fantastic, and I like the antiqued look of the hilt furniture.

Mine was 2.8 pounds which seems about what all CYOS variants go for, with a point of balance about 5 inches off the crossguard.  That makes it feel kind of slower and blade-heavy for someone more accustomed to later-period, pointier arming swords and greatswords, but is absolutely typical in both weight and handling characteristics to a historical blade of this type: an ~11th century arming sword, approximately Oakeshott XIa.  It is designed to deliver authoritative cuts, and it definitely can.

The only thing that's less than perfect on mine is on is one of the fullers is slightly off center as it nears the crossguard, by approximately 3mm.  It doesn't affect function in any way; and it's centered a few inches further up the blade.  Even with that imperfection the fuller is still straight.  This is ultimately just kind of a result of the hand-forged nature of these blades.

It's not noticeable enough to really deduct a full star over, and if I could deduct a half-star I probably would, but considering the remarkable value for a hand-forged, custom-designed, peened-construction functional weapon, I can't in good conscience deduct a full star over it.

Very nice for the price
After playing with the BYOS page for a while I decided to purchase one.  Delivery was in under a week.  Was packed well.  I was really suprised at the quality.  Yes, the sword is a tank.  It is heavy but not terribly so.  Very solid.  No wiggle or loose parts.  I ordered a brown grip and it is very dark.  Almost black.  Stitching is tight and feels sturdy.  In all a sturdy sword that is in my opinion a good value and kind of fun to put your own input on it.  I will probably order a few more.

Not as expected, but still great.
I liked going through the options.  MusRep delivered a cool sword.  But, I thought the engraved initials would be on the "engraveable guard"; they were on the blade instead.

A little let down
The sword is sturdy but very blade heavy. A few things made it a let down when it didn't need to be. First the peen was messy. I cleaned it up the best I could. Second the pommel had a very dark patina which took some work to clean up. But most dissapointing was the fact that the type A pommel is noticeable off center and there is nothing I can do about that. I like the idea of build your own sword but the execution was lacking at least on mine.

Good sword
The sword and scabbard look great. It feels a bit heavy for its size and was slightly shorter than I was expecting, but It's a decent and well-built sword.

Good product.
The sword came less than a week after being ordered.  For the price, overall construction was nice.  I ordered the sharpening service and initials, and itncane with my initials as ordered.  It was sharpened, but I might try and get it a littler sharper.  Over all, I’m very pleased with this purchase.
